My Sambar is in desperate need of a valve adjustment... who's got the specs? Thanks!

Colin,
why don't you try the site I posted earlier today. See if they're as good and helpful as ther're advertising to be. Can't hurt can it?

Their "resources" section is down... sent them email requesting the information.

To clarify, this is a KS4 660cc engine. :)

I've been in touch with Tim from Subic Bay - he's hard at work translating manuals and updating their webpage. From the sounds of it, his contact in Japan has not yet replied with the lash spec.

Still looking for the info.

Colin:
How many kms are on your truck now? How do you know it "is in desperate need of a valve adjustment"?? What are the symptoms? Just curious.

I screwed with the adjustment when I was replacing the valve cover gasket. It sounds like gravel in a blender. :o

It seemed to need some adjustment beforehand, since it had a little rattle at certain RPMs.

Colin, have you checked what the valve clearances are right now? I do not know what the valve specs are on a Subaru, but I can give you the specs for a Suzuki F6A 660cc engine that might give you a reference at least.Cold engine, .003 intake,.006 exhaust

The mitsu's spec at ; .006" in .009" ex (cold) and .008"in and .012"ex (hot)

Thanks, guys. I'll split the difference and shoot for something around .007 on the intake and .009 exhaust... we'll see what happens. :D

Apparently, Tim at Subic Bay replied to me on the 11th, but I accidentally deleted the email. D'oh! :o

Valve lash - Subaru KS4
Cold setting

Intake .15mm +/- .02mm (.0059 in +/- .0007 in)
Exhaust .20mm +/- .02mm (.0078 in +/- .0007 in)

Many thanks to Tim at Subic Bay Minitrucks! :D

Colin glad you got that info. Big difference from the Mitsu and Suzi.

Bad news. I set the exhaust valves to .008 and intake to .006 today, the clicking noise decreased but was still present. On my way home I lost power and the engine started making a LOT of noise, then felt like it was running on two cylinders. I believe I've either blown a rod or popped a headgasket. :(

Time for that engine swap I've been talking about, I guess.

Oh, man! That's awful!:( I know us gearheads always like to think we "just had to" do that engine swap (or whatever project), but this is extreme! I don't want to think about tearing into one of these... no manuals/specs, no easy parts source...
Please document everything well.... maybe you'll end up with your own ENGLISH shop manual by the time you're done.
Keep us posted.

Actually, it sounds like you sucked a valve. Still VERY bad news.

Aye. Could be. :sly:

I took the day off at my part-time night job, so I'll probably pull the box off the truck and dig into the engine this evening.

Did you get the chance to pull the head? What did it look like inside? Care to post pics for the hardcore geeks like me? :D

You bet your *** I'll be posting pictures. :D

I'm going to pull the bed to facilitate engine swappage. Haven't quite got it off yet.

when the swapping is in progress, might I drive over and see it for myself?

Finally started swapping the engine today. I've been tied up with dozens of other projects recently.

I got the old engine out, thought about hefting the new one in place, and remembered my throwout bearing had been growling a little. Called up Joe at G&R Imports again and ordered a new throwout bearing and pilot bearing. Should be here early next week, then I can put the truck back together.

Look at the size of these intake ports!

I'm thinking one of the old pistons will be just about the perfect size for a shift knob (but not for the Sambar, since it has the 4WD button.) :D
