Other then the fact that the Sambar has more cab room, what would you say are the biggest advantages of owning one.

Do you think the rear mounted powerplant is an advantage?

I had an Artic Cat 300 w/ a rear engine design and it was kind of a pain.
I could not put much weight on the rear of it, anything I hauled that carried much weight had to go on the front. Is that a problem with the Sambar.

O.K Collin, this is your chance to sing the praises of the mighty Sambar!:D

It's got four wheel independent suspension, so it handles alright. Supposedly they're a little quicker than the other trucks, too. I cannot verify that, since I'm a one-truck man. :D

Four cylinder engine vs. the other's triples. All specs being the same, you can put an el-cheapo tach in one, instead of having to pay a stiff price premium for one that will hook up to any engine.

The minitruck design doesn't seem to lend itself well to lowering. If you lower the front too much, your *** interferes with the tire, and you can't really "tuck" the rear tire, since there isn't really a wheel well.

We've only had ours since the first of February, but, I can't believe HOW quiet it is. After it's warmed up, I swear it's hard to hear it running. As far as the tach, I' am not mechanically inclined AT ALL and I installed one this last week. It took a while "poking" around to find what was the negative side of the ground, but the cost was only around $60 for a tach from carquest auto supply. Prejudice? yup! You bet. I've never been in any other make, but the ride is unbelievably smooth

Colin,
could you give me an idea what the "spare tire mount latch" looks like? There's the "frame" part on ours, but it seems like somethings missing for it to latch in or on to.

Thanks
Tom

I would love a 2 wheel drive SC for the same purpose:cool::cool:

There's a hinged piece on the frame and a threaded hook thing on the box. You lift up the hinged piece and place the hook into a slot. The weight of the tire keeps it from springing open.

I've had mine about a year and a half. It's a 1991 model. I added the Crossroads front and rear lift kit, and it now has my old Scion Xb steel wheels. They're 15" rims (center-bored out a little to fit) with the standard Scion 185/60R15 tires. I've hauled up to 25 bales of pine straw, nice loads of lumber and plywood, and have hauled our 2 three wheelers in the back nose to nose--that's a sight to see! They weigh about 275 lbs. each plus gas, ramps, tools, etc., with 2 adults in the cab--no problem. I like the accessibility of the engine, and it's really neat to drop the rear engine bonnet and see the little Clover Four 4 cyl. shiny aluminum valve-covered engine. The spare tire slides into a sort-of half circle arrangement between the top of the frame and the bottom of the bed on the right-hand side. There is a metal strap (about 2"x6" or 7") connected to a hinge on the top side of the frame. You lift the strap up around the tread of the tire, and there is a threaded rod with a hook on one end--the top and this simply hooks into a slot in the bottom of the bed. You put the threaded rod through the strap and tighten down with the nut until the tire won't move. It's like a battery hold-down fitting with the hook and threaded end. I really like the Sambar with its four cylinders--especially since I added premium left and right speakers and the CD receiver.

I use mine mostly for driving around town and the rear engine is so much quieter. That and the larger cab were the big draw for me. Oh, and the large rear window, I like shoulder checking and if you crank around far enough you can see more of who's coming up beside you.

i had my pick of about 15 trucks when i bought mine. I had a choice between every make and model sold. My boss is a dealer, service and parts for them. I personnally customize them from lifts and paint to aftermarket stereos and also do mechanic work on them but didnt own one until about 5 months ago. The subaru was in the back and was the cheapest one so i bought it and havent regretted it yet. i have 13 inch tires and wheels on it made specifically for minis and i have overhauled the engine. Its top speed is 135km. i plan on painting it in the subaru stars theme and adding steel tube front and rear bumpers plus an exterior battery box with a full size battery. Alot of plans for the future. I will post pics. I love this little truck!!!

Sounds cool, missminis. Have you seen any of the posts I've made about the "WRC" Sambars that there are in Japan? Oh, and I've seen the "shooting star" design like on the side of the rally cars on Ebay. Keep us posted!
