What's the first step in re-moving a (the) radio? I' am wanting to put in something different with FM and haven't a clue where to start. There doesn't look like there's enough room behind the radio to "cuss out a cat" little own getting your hand and a screw driver back there!

Thanks,

I am not familiar with the Subaru. On a Suzuki or Daihatsu, you remove the ash tray and ash tray mounting bracket. There is a bracket that bolts to the back of the radio and to the truck. Remove it and the radio will slide out. That same bracket is the ground and works very well. Hope this helps some.

I swapped out the stock radio for a Kenwood deck in my Sambar van... it was fairly simple and fast. Popped the plastic around the deck with a slim blade screwdriver and I think there was 4 screws in total to remove. Two holding the deck to the mounting chasis and 2 holding the deck chassis to the van (holding the ground as well as pointed out) - and the deck slid right out... fast like 2 minutes, took me another 15 to figure the wiring harness out. I did blow a fuse two days later for some unknown reason, but found it (15amp i think, that also controlled the power windows)... hasn't blown since in 4 months.

Goozey,
It was your suggestion that worked. I had to make some modifications to get the radio to fit, but had it working( like you said ) in 15 minutes. The antenna worked as the ground. Happened on to "hot" wire the first "stab" with "hot light". Again,,,,
Thanks!

I know this is an old post but it helped me out ALOT. Thanks!

I installed a new DVD player in my truck and fit like a charm! No I don't NEED a dvd player but did some horse trading with a friend and it didn't cost me a dime. I remember reading on another post (could not find it now) that there was no room behind the stock radio, but I am telling you there is plenty of room for an after market stereo. I even put 5 1/4" speakers where the 4 X 6 ones should be. Sounds really good, just need a subwoofer but no room!! Posting some pics, all I have left to do is modify the stock bezel to fit around the bigger radio. Hope this helps someone else!

Could someone please help me with the wiring for the radio. I have been messing with it for about a week and cannot figure out the wiring. I need to know where the two black wires, red, blue, and white wires go. For the life of me I can not figure it out. I know the other two are for the speakers. Anyone that replies, thanks for the help in advance.

Not sure about all your wires, I did not have two black ones etc. But this thread helped me a lot. This is when I learned that wires have multiple uses in these trucks, i.e. when key is on it is a ground, when off has 12vdc... weird to our normal standards, but smart to use one wire for multiple purposes...

While very educational. That information did not help much. You guys that put dvd and cd players in your subaru sambars, please help me in this instance.

are you referring to the truck wires or the wiring on your stereo?...there are only 3 wires (2 actually since you can ground to anything metal attached to the chassis) you need the constant power and the ign. on power...if you don't have a multimeter you can use a small lightbulb with 2 wires attached to find the wires you need...ground one end of the lightbulb to any metal part of the truck and touch the other end to each of the wires (with the key in off position) when the bulb lights up that is your constant BATT+ wire...turn the key on and do the same thing again with the rest of the wires...when the bulb lights you have found IGN+...now to make sure that IGN+ is the proper one (leave the key in on position) and turn the headlights on and off and move the dimmer knob (if you have one)...if the bulb goes out tape off the wire and ignore it it is for stereo illumination and isn't needed...keep testing till you find one that keeps the bulb lit only with the key in the ON position and the headlights/dimmer do not affect it .... subaru always uses black for ground...you may have 2 grounds one for the radio and one for radio lighting....they also USUALLY not always use blue/yellow for IGN+ ...once you find the 2 or 3 wires you need tape off all the rest so they can't ground out and tuck them away...I'm assuming that you won't be using the stock speaker wiring

I am planning on using the factory speaker wiring but that shouldnt be a problem considering there is only 2 speakers. Unless you know something I dont know

no if you have 2 factory speakers in a good spot that you can swap out that's fine...many of the mini trucks came with a single crappy speaker in the dash and have to run wiring for door speakers....

Hey Subierider

Took my cd/mp3 player out today. (The importer/dealer had it installed along with new front speakers)

Here is what I found : BLUE wire connects to the RED , WHITE wire connects to the YELLOW, they used the BLACK (the one next to the BLUE) for ground. The other BLACK along with the RED/(Green stripe) were left untouched. They also run all new wire for the speakers, so I don't know what the original colors were for those.

Hope this helps you out. :)

I took my Daihatsu in and had the guys at the shop replace the Radio. They said it was a Toyota harness. They just hooked it up with one of those.

Buy and el-cheapo multimeter. Shouldn't even consider doing this kind of work without one. Wouldn't think of doing this install without a screw driver, right? The cheap multimeter is just as important to throw into your toolbox.

I never consider wire colors. Ever. Especially when it comes to OEM harnesses.

I just take the multimeter and use the continuity selection to determine which wires were speaker wires and ground and then voltage selection to find which wire is hot all the time and which one goes hot when the ignition key is turned on. Simple enough that the light-bulb circuit tester as described above could also do it. But cripes amighty. In the modern day of sub $10 multimeter/circuit testers there should not be a man without one. I have a similar philosophy about having a harbor-freight air compressor in every man's garage but I digress.

I didn't realize the Sambar uses a Toyota harness. Geeze. That would make it really easy to buy a Scoche or Metra Toyota harness and not even have to probe out the wires.

It DOESN'T. The Sambar uses a SUBARU harness. Scooter has a Daihatsu, which uses a Toyota harness. ( DAIHATSU = TOYOTA ). :)
