Has anyone had any luck replacing the stock stereo in their dihatsu mini truck? I pulled the stock am radio out and found that the radio sleeve (approximately 4") is much shorter than the standard stereo (7.5"). Please help!

I install stereos in the dihatsu trucks obove the glove box in the dash, take the glove box out and check for clearance first, but so far all ive done have been good. you will need an antenna extension wire which can be had at alost any parts store or walmart.

I put a pioneer dehsp071 wal-mart in mine. took 30 min for the stero. brackets screwed in perfectly. had to push a bit but that solves vibration problems on nebraska gravel roads. speakers took more time.

do you have pics of the radio install? TIA.

no pics... that would require forward thinking. if i recall, the stuff in the way toward the front is not extremely ridgid. I have a 97 hijet that i thought would be similar. will try a recreation for you though.

There was all kinds of room in my 99. But had to redrill the brackets in order to mount it.

I put a am/fm-cd in my jumbo, had to open up the face plate on the dash so it sticks out about 2.5 inchs and made a plastic pice to go around it.
It looks good and it is out of the way.

yeah we get them from wal-mart. pretty basic install. If you cannot find what you need at wal-mart try a stereo store (ex. stereo one) they might be able to get something that matches up.

Thanx. With some attention to what one is doing, one will fit. Cool.

I put in a jvc cd/mp3 model # KDS32 player in mine, was really suprised because it was a in and out job, mounting bolts and everything matched up perfectly. Also just yesterday I installed some kicker 4 inch speakers in the door. Had to fab a 1/4 inch spacer out of plywood so the magnet would clear the window, sounds pretty good, a lot better than the am radio with one dash speaker. Oh yeah, I have a 97 hijet. Later I am going to add some 6.5 pioneer open air marine speakers behind the seat and inclose them with a box in the bed.

I have a question for those of you that have put speakers in the doors of these trucks... how did you protect the speaker wires going into the door. My 89 hijet doesn't have any sort of rubber bellows thru which you would ordinarily run them. I was going to use rubber grommets where I drill holes, but that does nothing to protect the wire out in the open from the pillar to the door? Any suggestions??

I used bulk 16/2 extension cord. I put gromets in the holes where I ran the cord.

Thanks for the reply myhijet!!!

How much clearance did you have from the door panel surface to the glass when you put your speakers in? I picked up some cheap pioneer 6 1/2" co-ax speakers with a mounting depth of 1 5/8". I was going to have the guy's in the proto shop here at work machine some 1/2" spacers out of delrin. Do you think that will work?

build a box or make a console on the floor board...its simple, i built mine so that it comes apart, and at some point i will be making a new one.

This box held a smaller set of speakers then i butchered it for a set of components. When I build another I will post it, until then, it is what it is....

Tweeters top of box.
The Radio is a PIONEER DEHSP102

Speakers are KICKER DS650.2 components

The Amp is mounted on a 10" x 13" aluminum plate that is mounted to the cab behind the bumper.

i recently mad a trip to the stereo shop, for suggestions on the new box. he said i was losing alot of sound due to the box placement. i just dont like putting them in the doors, due to cutting and it just seems any location in the doors is in my way. he also said the amp more than compensates for the lost sound due to location (hahaha) It is loud enuff to make ur ears ring! and has just enuff bass to make the mirrors have a slight vibration. almost ok but far from perfect. i did get the wood for the new box but still trying to design the best box.

well i finally built a new box. the only problem is that i still think there is a better design, so I am sure to build another one! anyways this box is smaller and stronger and i built it so that it is removable as quick as you can turn 4 screws (2 on the top and 2 on the side) also it is not attatched to the truck, i made it so that it clenches the raised portion in the middle (aka the hump). i kept the same amp but ditched the other speakers, yes they are much better now they are kicker KS650.2 components with crossovers. i have not decided if i am going to paint this box or cover it, depends on how fast i come up with another box. i am looking to add a special sub (secret) about 200watts RMS worth! anyhow u will just have to wait, also i am looking to add 1 more set of KS350 they are 3.5" woofer and tweeter. i should have the loudest clearest system in a mini, (atleast for now). ofcourse i think i may be the most stupid for investing the time, effort and 300 bucks, the thing is that i drive my truck a minimum of 20 miles a day to work and back, well basically i drive it as much as i can. anyhow if any1 has any suggestions for me or something they would like to see, i may build it. and if there are any carpenters out there (shut up!) lol just kidding, i am by no means very capable at building these things. however i am getting better. and depending on how many pics i can attach, i may just post pics on the next reply

These little alternators and batteries keep up to a system like that? I remember back in the day, the surge i would get from just 1 sub would be astronomical on full size alt and batt.

Doddy
06-10-2010, 05:41 PM
these alternators put out 35 amps maybe more. I am working on a battery swap, but yes i have had this stereo in for as long as i have had the truck but added the amp a few months later, my system is close to 200 (rms) it takes double that for a decent sub. i have a 1000w system in my jeep and yes if i turn up the sub in that it causes the lights to flicker, but i also have 2 pair of the same speakers in that as i just put in the mini. people us those farrad's or whatever u want to call them aka lighting cap/ bass cap, sure they work for about 30 seconds, they basically do nothing and are a waste of time and $$$. the bottom line is yes the truck can keep up and the battery does just fine. but depending on what i add next and how much, i will upgrade to a full size gel battery, i plan on moving the battery into the tongue box that i put in last weekend. saying all this, i have checked the battery (once a month) its fine. also i still plan on putting a winch, and an inverter 700 to 800 watts, so i havent decided if i will use 2 batteries or find a larger alternator or both.

Ok guys I have added 4 ds40 (4") kicker speakers that will are powered by the head unit. I removed the speakers from the console for which i built a new box for the sub which is a cvt6' (6.5") powered off the amp. I have come up with so many ideas on this last build that i may do it all over but a little different. So at this point there is the first stage of the bondo, i just wanted to get some pics up. It sounds great. This costs $128 bucks (small budget)

i have a 92 hijet. i mounted the radio above the glove box as stated in this thread and then built a wedge shape box on the roof above the headrest and mounted two 6-1\2" speakers in it. the box is 2-5\8" deep in back to a point in front by 10" wide made of 3\8" plywood. box is against back of cab above rear window. the piece of plywood closest to head liner is wedged above the door jambs between the headliner and metal inside edge of jamb. no holes to inside of truck at all. box has to be built in place pretty much. speaker wires are routed in windshield post to roof area and down along where door jamb and roof liner meet into the box. did not take up hardly any head room and sounds great. will try to add picks after i get it painted.

Well I had forgotten my login info so I have not been on here in a long time. I have since changed the stereo setup twice since. I have put door speakers in with sealed boxes and speakers behind and the sub in the console. I am upset with my truck right now cuz of some issues and have not driven it in over 6 months. lol
