What about an industry-only section?
There are discussions I would like to have with others in the industry, but retail consumers need not be involved in.
(legitimate) Dealers, Exporters & importers.
I know there will be some resistance as to how to determine legitimate industry people, but there are enough people well above board to have industry level conversations.
More business related talk, marketing, group buys, etc.
Any thoughts?

Yeah, I know what you mean. At one point I suggested a private section for supporting members only but I'm not sure if Kevin liked the idea. But it may work for what you are talking about.

i think a "dealers only" section is well deserved... as long as i still have access and can heckle at will :D

I actually had a Dealer section setup for awhile, but my only problem was how do I know if you're a dealer or not. Seems like everyone is a dealer now days.
Any ideas?

Maybe! The only good thing I can see about a private area is that paying dealers can share/contribute ideas/lessons learned about the industry and not have to worry about non supporting dealers leeching the info and not contributing in some way. If we have enough members request this maybe Kevin can find a way to work it out. We'll see.

I think if you support the site as gold/silver/bronze then you should have access. Obviously...I'm guessing about half the bronze supporters are dealers though. I don't know.

Proving you are a business. To do business in Texas you have to have a "State Sales and Use Tax Permit". It will have your name, business location, and a permit number. By law it has to be displayed in your business and is public information so sending a copy would not be a problem.

Some thoughts:
- One thing I would like is a B to B classifieds. I "exchange" parts with a lot of other dealers in North America. It works well for all of us as the swap is mutually beneficial and generally can keep a lot of cash flow in hand. I think others may be interested in trading parts.
As far as proving a legitimate industry member, some ideas:
The memberlist could be self-policed. Everyone who is in has to post all their business information where everyone else in the group can read it. It would be easy to check the legitimacy of the information in many cases. Members can dispute the legitimacy of the other members. Democracy - Majority Rules.
Like Trax says, actual business registration is a great starting point. In Canada you must be a licensed automobile dealer to sell the trucks. No government issued license? Then you are not a legitimate dealer. Not sure about the USA, but it seems to be a free for all. (Other than the EPA Certs)
I think there are many dealers around that have been for a long time and are fairly well know by others in the industry. There are known wannabes and illegal dealers. There are unknowns. Either new to the industry, fairly quiet or unheard of, or somewhere in the gray area of legitimacy. This last section would be the most difficult to determine, but I think with all of the above, it should be pretty good and fair.
New members may require a nomination from someone already in? Its a small industry and when new dealers pop up, usually someone knows about it. Many of us use the same exporters in Japan and suppliers in North America. News travels fairly quick through the grapevines.
Yes, sponsorship would be a requirement, but does not guarantee approval. (But would be used as instant denial)
And yes, we have lots to hide. The conspiracy will grow exponentially soon!

I've added the new dealers section, lets see how this works. Only dealers and exporters can access this section. If you don't see the section you don't have access. If you're a dealer, ask for access here. This way we all know who has access. We can weed out the non-dealers or fakes.

Hmm should be right under the "Click Here to Become a Sponsoring Member". First section. I just checked the permissions, shows that you have access.

One would think just the idea of not being able to see what is going on in there would be enough :sly:. For only two members its actually a good start.

Haha. No moderation allowed. Free for all crap flinging contests ;)
I think there are a couple of moderators in there who arent dealers, but thats ok. If they let out our evil industry secrets they will be beaten with a large stick full of rusty nails.

What I miss is group buys found on some of the other forums ... or raffles. I know they are work ... perhaps that will come :pop:

Well, I can honestly say that there is potential in the group buy concept. I organized many when I ran a VW enthusiasts site years back and it is a great option IF the users/buyers actually follow-thru and the person organizing the buy does their job with the vendor/manufacturer. That's where it can get messy.
Anyways, I just think the dealer's dont want it to leak out that we make $10,000 per truck... :sly: Muahahaha Mod's...please don't tell!

Kfrank, Stanislas, Fuzz, Mitsurebel,
First off, you need to provide your complete business info. (Address, company name, website, business license, dealer license, etc, etc. )
I think I speak for everyone when I say "a couple of trucks" would not be considered a dealer. We are talking about honest to goodness full time businesses, not just sideliners who brought in a can and kept a couple trucks and sold the rest. (No offense to anyone, but that is not a "dealer" in my books)
In Canada you would need to provide your automobile dealers license as well. (It is illegal to sell these without such license here)
There is has been very little import talk so far. Most is B to B stuff including confidential pricing information not intended for the general public.
So, if this is a full time business for you and you can prove it, then you will likely be allowed. However, if you cannot prove that then you will not be allowed in.

I would like to retract my request. I have all of the above documentation, but it is not my full time job. Thank you for clarifying the requirements, I guess I misunderstood.
