View Full Version : Frozen Cables

Well winter has hit in the North (Nelson, BC) and my cables are frozen. Yesterday my emergency brake was a bit tight to pull up. I managed to unstick it with a little gentle pulling/releasing. Well tonight the gas pedal was frozen stuck, I started the truck and tapped the pedal for a bit and it is now stuck in the full throttle position. I removed the little cover (in the cab) and the wire is slack and won't return to the "neutral" position. Any thoughts? Is there a grease/antifreeze to lube these things with. I hope it warms up tomorrow enough to release it. If not, I will have to find a heated garage.
Thanks

I had my handbrake cable stick last night, too. I was also able to alleviate the sticking by holding down the button and gently tugging up on the handle several times.
A product like "Kable Ease" (made by AGS, carried by finer auto parts stores) would probably work well.

I wonder if the steam cleaning these things apparently get before export could be driving water into places it shouldn't be?

Could very well be. I bought a can of "Cable Life" and just have to wait until it warms up to shoot the cables with it. It did thaw and refreeze the other day and now the peddle is frozen at no throttle. Better than full! Maybe I will try and run it for awhile and see if it heats up enough to move.

My 4WD button on the shift knob doesn't like to return to the upward position in the cold weather - anyone else?

I had this same problem on the button. remove the spring pin through the handle. there is a very small philps screw in the handle holding the switch in. remove screw and push switch assemblly up out the top. you will find the vinal has swelled in the cavity so skin some material out with a razor knife. careful not to damage the exposed area of the handle. reassemble and should be good.

Same problem only in cold weather below freezing. The strange thing it always starts fine I let it warm up the nothing seems to be freezing up in the carb because it will always idle high at first (cold weather) then idle down when she's all warmed up thats when this problem ocurrs the accelerater pedal will have no play and eventually gets stuck in the full throttle position and will be stuck until temp rises above freezing. If its actually the throttle cable freezing wouldn't it be frozen before I start the thing I always have to pump the thing a few times in cold weather to start it and the pedal always feels fine when intially starting.

Hey, I also live in the north, lots of snow and I have another problem. My gear shifter is super hard to move....at first I thought that my gear oil was too thick, so I put some lighter oil in there....no change. A buddy of mine thinks maybe the cables need to be greased???
Can I grease up the cables? HELP
