My shifter has 1 2 3 4 5 R and E1. I have been able to shift into all except E1 Am I supposed to do something special to get it into E1? I'm assuming this is the lowest gear.

I always thought it was EL (Extra Low)
It's not avaialable in 2WD, you most shift to 4WD. If you can't while in 4WD, perhaps there is something out of adjustment.

Thanks Speedy. I'll check the linkage.
It may be EL, mine looks like E1, but it is probably a bit worn.

It is correct, you must shift into 4wheel drive before it will shift into extra low. I thought mine wasn't working until I kept trying. Simply put in 4wheel and it will shift.
Hope this helps,

That was the fix. I put it in 4x4 and it slid right in to the low low gear. Thanks dwest.

I have a 91 with the same problem but it will not shift even in 4x4 any solutions I have taken the top plate off the trans where the shift forks are and tried to manually get it to shift but still won't.
