Hello! I recently purchased a 1996 Daihatsu Hijet S110P with Automatic transmission. I received the truck and it was driving well, but after I went to fill it up with gas (91 no ethanol), it began lurching while driving, randomly increasing RPMs, and holding RPMs with my foot off the gas pedal. It feels like it's lurchung / changing gears randomly. Quite an uncomfortable ride. Since then, the problem has been intermittent, sometimes it runs well but other times it has this issue. The other day I drove it for 45 minutes and it was working great, but then I parked for 20 minutes and when I started it back up and drove it had the issue again. Sometimes it works better with the gas cap loose (thinking a vapor lock issue?) but not always.

A video of what's going on (turn volume up to hear the engine). I am not changing the pressure on the gas pedal at all during this video: https://photos.app.goo.gl/JPURFUtvoXA1cBtA7

    A few other notes:

*Oil, air filter, and gas filter are all good and clear

*I'm definitely using the right type of gas

*I can trigger the problem by filling it up with gas. Immediately following the refuel the problem begins again.

*There is a subtle gasoline smell around the vehicle generally (but that may just be because it's so old)

My leading theory is the charcoal canister / a venting issue, but wanted to see if anyone had any similar experiences or thoughts. Thank you!

I can report that mine also has a bit of a gas smell but not the problem you are describing. Occasionally it will die at idle in cold weather, especially if I put it on reverse. I would start by making sure the vacuum system is in good order, which is what I need to do for mine.

  3. I ran across this posting as I have a similar vehicle. Well do you have an update on the issue? Have you figured out the problem?
I noticed mine has started shifting a little hard at times. Just checked the ATF level and it was on the lower end. Think I have a small leak.
Do you know what type of ATF it uses? My truck didn’t come with a manual.

For the 1997 and 1998 automatic transmission, Ammix DIII Multi is called for (Ammix is the Daihatsu dealer brand). It's a JASO 1A standard fluid, any of which will work. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic Multivehicle in mine.

The 1994-1996 electronically controlled transmissions don't use the same fluid. The manual says 'Ammix DII', but I don't know what an equivalent would be.

  5. Thanks for the information! Just guessing here but the D stands for Dexron. They still sale the Ammix DIII on Amazon.jp the description there states:
    • High performance fluid comparable to GM Descron III standard (translation is a bit wonky. Probably meant Dexron I would think).
With the research I’ve done Dexron II was superseded by III. It is backwards compatible so safe to use. I believe it’s all the way up to IV now and they are all backwards compatible with each other. It has some additives for friction durability, viscosity stability, aeration and foam control, and oxidation resistance for a longer life transmission.

I am guessing charcoal canister(s) might be ready for replacing, if you have checked vacuum lines
