    Default Engine Compatibility U15 U42 U61

    Hey everyone,

Has anyone tried to put a newer engine to an older trans?

I've got a manual gearbox and was hoping that I could find an engine from a newer Minicab and slap it in my U15V.

There's something warm and fuzzy about 4 or 5 valves per cyl. Not to mention fuel injection and coil on plug!

The blocks all look the same. I just wished I could slap my flywheel on there and bolt it up to my subframe.

    Anyone tried?

The problem is getting a dealer to sell me an engine.... I can find one in Japan pretty easily and ship it home (I've done it before). I don't have the time though... I'm anchored in Spain on a yacht for the next 6 months.

I just want to pay cash and come home to the engine of my dreams.

    Hello,

You are better of replacing the engine transmission from a U42V-HLNUM series with a matching U42V DOHC 3G81 as it is almost a direct match except some driveshaft length modifications. If you want power go with the HLNUM series transmission and the turbo 4A30-T engine. This engine came in both carbureted and EFI (U63W Series).

    Default U15 engine swap

I almost want to cry. That is some very usefull info, Don. You've done me and surely many people down the road a great service.

I'm not scared of having shafts made. I might need the 2 yolks from the truck the gearbox came from though....

The only thing that scares me about the newer stuff is I've got 2WD-HI, 4WD-Low and 4WD-Hi actuated manually with a lever between the seats. Did the HLNUM 5MT/T ever come with manual 4WD?

I was under the impression the newer stuff was AWD and electric or something strange like that.

I've seen some great pictures of various 3g83 engine and trans' that "look" the same as I've got. In a perfect world.. a DOHC supercharged 3g81 would slap right onto my gearbox.

I couldn't find much on the 4A30-T other than it seems to be either for a Pajero or something that looks like a Mits Miev. My ears are wide open though!

Has anyone ever put a 3g81 up to a 3g83 gearbox??

Can I put an engine from an automatic into a MT U15?

All the engines I see online are from newer automatic Mits cars.
