1997 minicab

Changed engine and now I don't remember how to hook up the main wiring harness to the new engine.Any help would be appreciated.there are two plugs that will plug in to two different places and I don't remember which goes where. Which plug is # 1?The truck backfires thru the carb when I try to start it. I also need a good reference book that will show me where everything goes.

Whenever I hook up the plug to the alternator(not the large red hot wire) the engine backfires and won't start.I can unplug the wire and it will start and run. Why? What do these wire do?If they are disconnected will the battery be charged? Need help please.
