Anyone put a larger alternator on their truck? I've got a 99' deck van I will be putting a stereo in and I don't think the stock alternator will handle it. My thoughts are to put a little larger alt on it, battery isolator so I can run two batteries and a large cap for the amps. Anyone had any experience with something like this?
alt i have a 92 jumbo im runing a icom2200h 2 meter ham radio.a sony am/fm/cd player and serious sat radio and a fan im runing a stock alt with a garden tractor battery and mine is working fine
My alternator quit, and not wanting to spend more on a replacement than I paid for the truck, I did some searching on ebay. I searched for denso alternators, thinking I could find a similar one and put the guts out of it into mine if the mounting ears were different. I found that some 80's toyota's had about the same alternator, with different mounting tabs, some were 150 amp. You should be able to buy one of them and swap out the internals. I ended up finding that the alternators off Kubota tractors are identical to the one on my hijet (mounts, plug, and all) so I just bought one of them. (brand new= $75)
Here is a link to one of them on Ebay, it has the part number as well as listing the tractors that it fits. I used the link to that ad because it showed a better picture than the one I bought, but I bought mine from SevenStatesSupply (cheapest price), his ad stated that he was selling new take offs because he was putting larger alternators on, and he had more for sale. His ad also stated that if you buy five or more he would offer a 10% discount, so it may be an option for the mini dealers on here to get some cheap alternators. I might add that my Hijet is an 87 model, don't know how long they used the same ones. http://cgi.ebay.com/Kubota-Alternat...yZ121876QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
Thank you very much, I have been wondering what alt. I could find in the event mine ever quit. I appreciate it. mine is a 93, I will check it out. Thanks again. Jay

HMMM, I had read somewhere that mine should be a 40 amp...... So I was thinking this was a direct replacement. Oh well, I don't have many accessories so it works for me.
My guess is that you'd be OK. Somewhere in the thread there was talk about 100 amp+ alt. My 99 Hijet has a 50 amp alt. but older models may use a 40. Its just not good to use an alt less than OEM spec. The price is definitely a hell of a lot better than what some want for a direct replacement. -Greg
